Rock Is Back. After 22 million records sold in the US and a three year hiatus, Kid Rock is back with the brand new album 'Rock N Roll Jesus'. Kid Rock hustled in the Detroit underground for over ten years before he burst into the mainstream in 1999 with the timeless rock anthem "Bawitdaba." Other hits like "Cowboy" and "American Bad A**" followed while ballads like his "Picture" duet with Sheryl Crow and "Only God Knows Why" helped to propel him forward as one of the greatest artists of our time. His latest offering Rock N Roll Jesus is no exception, running the gamut from hard rock to hip-hop to country and soul. Of the album, which Rock co-produced with Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, My Chemical Romance), he says: "I am proud of every single song on this record. It works from start to finish."

Cease to Begin by Band of Horses Buy new: $7.99
Released in March of 2006, Band of Horses debut Everything All the Time made good on thepromise hinted at in their early shows and demos. The band went from early shows opening forfriends Iron & Wine, to playing on The Late Show with David Letterman by July, and being nominatedas one of ten finalists (along with Joanna Newsom, Beirut, Tom Waits, and, the eventual winner,Cat Power) for the Shortlist Music Prize for that same year. And the record was well-receivedcritically, with celebratory press in Spin, Entertainment Weekly, NY Times, Harp, Billboard, Pitchfork,Magnet, NME, Uncut, and a slew of others. Not a bad place to start. For a lot of reasons, Cease to Begin is the perfect title for this new record. Not only do thesongs themselves weave this theme through the record, but stopping and starting anew is alsoa reflection of the past year and a half for Band of Horses. Though they worked with producerPhil Ek again, as they did on Everything All the Time, much has changed between the fairlyrecent then and now. There have been band members who have come and gone, including MatBrooke, who left the band to pursue other interests and his own band. For core members BenBridwell, Rob Hampton and Creighton Barrett, there has been a move from Seattle, WA to Mt.Pleasant, SC, a relocation that had been planned for some time so that they could all be closerto their families. And, close friends and family have come and gone some far too early. Necessarilyshot through with these experiences, the songs on Cease to Begin are strikingly beautiful, if lesselliptical and more straightforward, with more sophisticated arrangements than the last record.

The Naked Brothers Band by The Naked Brothers Band Buy new: $10.99
It's been called Nickelodeon's answer to Hannah Montana, but The Naked Brothers Band is more like a latter-day Partridge Family, only you get the sense that Nat and Alex Wolff--stars of the TV series, singers in the band, and real-life brothers--lead way more balanced lives than Danny Bonaduce ever did. So it doesn't come as much of a surprise that, with the exception of "Banana Smoothie," a song that sounds extracted from a Wiggles record and grooved up for a slightly older audience, they've crafted a solid debut CD. Where the Partridges had a handful of memorable hooks and killer harmonies, the Nakeds--Nat and Alex and four non-related kid bandmates--have Beatle-y melodies and believably kid-like voices and themes. "Crazy Car," a dazed-sounding song, and one of this disc's strongest, steers straight at 8-year-olds, never minding whether it picks up any parent-age passengers (a la the Partridges) along the way. Ultimately, that's the draw--The Naked Brothers Band, the show, falls into the mock-reality category, but its depiction of a couple of kids who've hit the big time and can't quite get a grip keeps it real. The music, not too polished and not too serious, is true to form. If Nat and Alex keep collecting fans the way David Cassidy did before them, "If That's Not Love" could be the new "C'mon, Get Happy," "Beautiful Eyes" the new "I Think I Love You." --Tammy La Gorce

Necessary Evil by Deborah Harry Buy new: $11.97 / Used from: $11.87
Anyone hoping for the 62-year-old Debbie Harry to sit up and act her age will be sorely disappointed by the former Blondie vixen's sixth solo album (and first in 14 years). Viscerally contemporary, Necessary Evil harnesses youthful exuberance from across the charts, and Harry and her team of producers and songwriting partners do radio-ready rock, pop, and soul-lite with à la mode savvy to spare. Big-time sing-alongs ("Two Times Blue," "You're Too Hot") rub elbows with spare, distorted guitar lines piled in arena-sized stacks ("Love with Vengeance," "Charm Redux," and the especially vivacious "Whiteout"). "The Devil's dick is hard to handle," Harry growls in "School for Scandal," encapsulating the attitude of shameless defiance coursing through this and other lean, mean, up-tempo numbers like the half-rapped, full-lipped "Dirty and Deep." Between the reversed hip-hop break bisecting "Charm Alarm," the title track's stolen riff from Rage Against the Machine's "Know Your Enemy," and Harry's bits of Internet imagery, this album won't dare let go of its of-the-moment moxie. Gumdrops like the flaccid "What Is Love" and closer "Paradise" are irrevocable but few; in all, the occasional slice of tripe strangely sweetens Harry's otherwise surprising longevity, ready to rock and salty as ever. --Jason Kirk
